The Arts

Music

Solefield's all-inclusive policy extends to music, in which all boys are introduced to the fundamental activities of performing, listening and composing.

Reception boys experience rhythm, percussion and singing, together with group violin lessons. Boys in Year 1 learn the ocarina, whilst recorder is taught in Years 2-5. Boys in the upper years have keyboard lessons in our custom-built keyboard room.

All boys perform in year group concerts where emphasis is on participation and enjoyment. In addition, there are informal concerts throughout the year as well as more formal events. The school has three choirs, two orchestras, as well as string, woodwind and recorder groups and even a rock group (or two!).

Solefield has a purpose built music school which helps to foster a strong tradition of playing and performing. This is reflected in the large percentage of boys who have individual music lessons on a wide variety of instruments and those pupils who have gained Music scholarships in recent years.

Drama

Drama forms an important and stimulating part of life at Solefield.

Timetabled lessons allow boys to experience acting, performance skills, improvisation, speaking to an audience, radio plays and puppet theatre. There are Drama clubs, with the senior boys having recently performed Bugsy Malone, The Pirate Pretender, Guys & Dolls, The Rocky Monster Show and Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Various trips to the theatre are arranged and visiting drama groups and performers are also regular features of the school calendar.

Art

Solefield is renowned for its Art, which is taught throughout the school from Reception to Year  8. Clubs and activities encourage boys to explore their own ideas and express themselves.

Drawing, print making, painting and modelling are all experienced along with the history and interpretation of Art.

Art should be fun and the culture of the department reflects this, but our standards are also very high with a large number of Art scholarships gained in recent years. Solefield's committment to art is further enhanced with the opening of a new purpose built art studio this Academic Year.
