Residential Trips

Year 5 - York

A four day stay in York is the first experience the boys will have of a residential trip away at Solefield School. Accommodation is at the Racecourse Centre, where the staff there are used to catering for schools.

Activities offered during the York trip include visits to the Minster, the Railway Museum, the Jorvik Viking Museum. A day is spent in the Victorian open-air museum at Beamish, where the boys will experience first hand what life was like for Victorians including an hour-long lesson in a Victorian schoolroom! Evening activities include ten pin bowling and a visit given by a group who provide hands-on craft activities associated with the Vikings or Romans.

Year 6 - France

Year 6 spend their residential educational visit in June  in the Pas de Calais. We travel by coach and ferry and stay at the Etap Hotel Boulogne where the children are accommodated 2 or 3 to a room. Breakfast and packed lunches are provided by the hotel and we have our evening meal in a variety of local restaurants, which provide a very authentic experience! A full and varied programme of events is undertaken and includes the following, amongst other activities:-

Visits to La Coupole rocket museum (complementing their studies in History this year), to a chocolaterie, to a bakery (where they make croissants and pains au chocolat), to Nausicaa aquarium, they go ten pin bowling, for a day at a theme park (Bagatelle), have a Guided tour of Boulogne (and the market), they visit Le Touquet, have time at the beach (sand castles, mini cricket and football), enjoy food tasting and even mini golf!

This trip offers a mixture of French language, cultural and fun activities and is really enjoyed by all.

Year 7 - Wales

At the end of Year 7 the boys go to Snowdonia, North Wales for a six-day field trip combining Geography and Science. The visit offers the opportunity to study topics in the field, rather than just from a book. It gives the boys the chance for some practical field-work in both subjects. Accommodation is provided at the Pen-y-Pass Youth Hostel, at the top of Llanberis Pass. Activities undertaken include river studies, rock-pool and woodland habitat studies, National Park management, a hill farm, Dinorwig power station and the Welsh Slate Museum visits.

Year 8 - Barcelona

In Year 8, following the Common Entrance exams, the boys leave for a week of relaxation and culture in Barcelona! This gives the boys a chance to put into practice the Spanish they have learnt whilst soaking up some of the different culture they experience but also to relax, have fun and enjoy the company of their fellow Year 8 pupils before they leave to go on to their different senior schools.
