Mrs McKeating, Little Acorns

9th February 2024

We would like to wish all the Little Acorns and their families a wonderful half term break, we can’t wait to hear all about what you have been up to when we get back to school.

Congratulations and celebrations!

Well done to Samuel and Harriet for achieving their resilience awards this week. You have both worked so hard to become more independent getting yourselves dressed and even helping to prepare food at home. We are very proud of you!

We would also like to wish Samuel a very Happy 4th Birthday for the 10th February! Have a wonderful day.

Book of the week

This week we have been reading ‘Lunar New Year’ part of the First Festivals’ series. It was fun to introduce the children to the concept of a non-fiction book and it produced lots of interesting language about Chinese celebrations and culture. Helena particularly liked the colourful lanterns and was excited to tell us about the dragon she had seen in a New Years parade.

Our quote of the week

We celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week this week at school. During the pre-prep workshop, Mrs Koheji asked the children what they can do if they are feeling frustrated. Harriet brilliantly answered, ‘Have another go!’ We couldn’t agree more! Other Little Acorns answers for who to turn to if you are feeling upset or angry included ‘tell your teacher’, ‘I lie down on my bed’ and ‘go to Mummy for some cuddles’. What wise souls!

Focus of the week

This week, we have been learning all about Chinese New Year. A broad topic like this gives scope for activities through all the areas of learning, but also allows us to follow the children with any particular ideas or interests they pick up on. For example, a fine motor activity involving transferring pasta with training chopsticks led to an entirely child-initiated role play game involving dividing out quantities of food for ‘the animals’ with Anselm expertly playing head chef!

The children have also enjoyed making concertina dragons in art, completing New Year themed activity sheets in maths, learning about the zodiac race in assembly and even having a go at saying Happy New Year in Cantonese.

Hopefully the children’s red envelopes have also found their way home to you as their Lunar New Year gifts, we can’t guarantee the contents will have lasted long enough for you to share though!

Pre-Prep Cross-Country

On Tuesday afternoon, the whole of the pre prep took part in the house cross country event. After a fantastic warm up led by the older boys, Little Acorns and Reception set off first, followed by Year 1 and Year 2. Despite the unfamiliar surroundings and decidedly blustery weather, the children did brilliantly, showing amazing resilience to complete the course and help each other along the way. Well done everyone!

Something to look forward to...

On Friday 23rd February, Little Acorns will be exhibiting in the Solefield Art Exhibition. They are excited about showing you some of their masterpieces!
