Mrs McKeating, Little Acorns

23rd February 2024

Welcome back to the second half of the term, we hope you all had a lovely break. It has been another busy week in Little Acorns, from outdoor learning to swimming and everything in between, we have had lots of fun!

Congratulations!

A huge well done to all the Little Acorns on being awarded Form of The Week for their hard work in our phonics sessions. We are so proud of you!

Book of the week

We have been reading ‘Building a Home’ this week which is great combination of fiction and real facts all about construction workers – both male and female! The book has led to lots of imaginative play using the wooden construction materials. Hard hats compulsory of course!

Our quote of the week

When working on building an amazing structure from the wooden blocks, Helena announced ‘I am the girl boss!’. Good for you Helena!

Focus of the week

This week we have been working on name writing and letter formation. Improving strength and dexterity is so important in the development of fine motor skills and we do this in a variety of ways, from threading beads to kneading play-doh. The children have access to a variety of mediums to practice letter formation such as the wooden alphabet board and tracing in coloured sand. This allows them to develop their muscle memory and truly master the skill. As the great educator Maria Montessori said ‘What the hand does, the mind remembers’.

Little Fishes!

There was great excitement this morning as we took our first trip to the swimming pool. The children all did so well, not only when they were in the water but with changing before and after. The highlight of the lesson was making ‘ice creams’ by blowing the coloured balls to the cups. What a treat to end the week!

Calling all dinosaur enthusiasts!

This terms’ Solefield Independent Project is dinosaurs! The project gives children the opportunity to extend their learning at home should they wish to do so – it is entirely optional! So if you have a palaeontologist in the making, who would like to take part in any dinosaur related activity, please send us a picture or bring something in to show us! It doesn’t need to be anything complicated, a painting, some colouring, remembering an interesting fact or choosing a dino book from the library. It really is the taking part that counts!

Something to look forward to...

As part of our new topic ‘Spring’, next week we are going to be planting some seeds!
