Throughout my years at Solefield (starting September 2014) the image of 'plucky Solefield' competing hard against local giants has been at the forefront of people’s thoughts - a small school, modest in numbers, consistently competing, and often excelling, on the sports field against larger, better-resourced opponents. It has often been seen as a ‘miracle’ when we beat these bigger schools, with tales told of such victories and heroes placed into the school folklore.
Recent successes continue to prove this understanding. Our National Basketball success was met with almost disbelief from parents and staff alike. The story remains the same for our students reaching National Football Finals, National Table Tennis Finals and even winning local rugby tournaments.
However, I am keen to stress that there is no miracle here.
What appears extraordinary from the outside is, in reality, the product of something far more powerful and far more reliable and is embodied by our three core Solefield Sporting values:
* Hard Work – every Solefield child should be willing to give 100%
* Team Player – selflessness and being happy for others to achieve
* Humility– show pride in the Solefield badge, win with grace & lose with dignity.
These are the values that shape every training session, every match and every individual involved.
At Solefield School, success is not stumbled upon - it is built.
Behind every strong performance lies hours of preparation. Through our PE lessons under Mr Jankowski (Head of PE) and his team, students also develop a deeper understanding of how their bodies work, learning about movement, coordination, balance and physical resilience. They begin to appreciate the importance of functional movement, not just for sport, but for lifelong health and wellbeing.
Staff give generously of their time, committing themselves well beyond the school day to coach, guide and develop their students. This is shown clearly through our introduction of Squads and our early morning training sessions in Basketball with Mr Jankowski, Swimming with Mrs Merlini and Mr Henry’s relentless pursuit of Table Tennis excellence in lunchtime clubs and squads and the introduction of the Solefield Sevenoaks Table Tennis Club.
It is not only in our Additional Sports that this dedication goes into. In our Major Sports, we are blessed to have four members of staff leading these sports with real expertise and passion: Mr Parker (Head of Football), Mrs Treacy (Head of Girls Games & Netball), Mr Reeves (Head of Rugby) and Mr Bowden (Head of Cricket) who embody what it takes for our students to succeed. Training sessions are purposeful and demanding, designed not just to improve skill, but to instil discipline and resilience. There is a constant strive for improvement and innovation, whether that be in use of facilities, coach education or partnerships with local sports clubs (such as Sevenoaks Town FC, Westcombe Park Rugby Club, Tonbridge Juddians Rugby Club & Sevenoaks Vine Cricket Club). There is no shortcut, no secret formula - just consistent, focused effort.
And the students respond in kind.
They understand that representing their school is a privilege that comes with responsibility. Talent alone is never enough; it must be matched with effort. They train with intensity, play with determination and learn to push beyond their limits. In doing so, they embody the first of the school’s core values: Hard Work.
But individual effort is only part of the story.
Solefield’s success is rooted just as strongly in its collective spirit. Teams are not simply groups of talented individuals; they are cohesive units built on trust and mutual support. Players celebrate each other’s successes, cover for each other’s mistakes, and understand that the team always comes first. This commitment to one another reflects the second key value: being a team player.
Perhaps most importantly, however, is the way in which success is carried.
Winning is never accompanied by arrogance. Defeat is never met with excuses. Students are taught to respect their opponents, officials and the game itself. They shake hands, they reflect, and they learn. In both victory and loss, they demonstrate the third and most telling value: Humility.
It is this combination - relentless effort, genuine teamwork and quiet humility that sets Solefield apart.
So, do we believe in miracles? Not here.
Because what looks like a miracle from the outside is, in truth, the predictable outcome of a culture that refuses to settle for less than its best. A culture where staff lead by example, students rise to the challenge, and values are not just spoken, but lived every day.
Solefield School thrives on the sports field not because of chance, but because of choice - the choice to work hard, to work together and to remain grounded no matter the result.
And that is far more impressive than any miracle.
Finally, to our parents - thank you for your belief. For pushing your children to commit, for fostering their passion for sport, and for standing behind the department in everything we do. Your support is an essential part of our success.
It is seen in the early morning drop-offs, the touchline encouragement and the quiet reinforcement of the values we strive to instil. The partnership between school and home is what allows our pupils to grow not only as athletes, but as individuals of character. Together, we are creating an environment where effort is valued, teamwork is expected and humility is never overlooked.
