It has been lovely to see everyone back after the break, and hear all about your exciting trips and holidays. The weather hasn’t quite played along, but this week we have started a new topic all about summer!
Welcome to Freya, who will be joining us in Little Acorns on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We are so happy to have you with us!
Fortunately, despite the weather, our cocoons have finally hatched, giving us three beautiful butterflies which we released on Friday.
Book of the week
This week we have been reading Hello Summer by Mary Kay Andrews. It has been a beautiful start to our new topic, but also delivers a thoughtful message about friendships, emotions and regulating feelings.
We then talked about what it means to be a good friend and the children came up with some lovely adjectives to describe the qualities that are important to them. Below you will see some pictures of the fabulous drawings of friends that the children produced.

Our quotes of the week
When we were talking about things we like to eat, James declared ‘My favourite food is STEAK!’. Delicious!
Arthur ‘When grow up, I would like to work in the sawmill, where they chop wood.’ We can’t wait to hear all about it Arthur!
Transient Art
We explored a new concept this week, that of transient art. The idea is to create a picture using ‘loose parts’ which is appreciated and enjoyed in the moment but is not permanently fixed.
Transient art offers numerous benefits for early years children, including fostering creativity, developing fine motor skills, and promoting mindful engagement.
Mrs Mack brought in some beautiful natural resources, including giant daisies, which the children enjoyed using their cutting skills to prepare. They were then free to arrange the objects however they chose on a piece of paper, offering a lovely opportunity for self-expression.
The activity also led to some great discussion and use of descriptive vocabulary when talking about the textures of the different objects.

A lovely comment from Arthur - I am making a big, big forest! There is one flower growing in a little acorn. We are Little Acorns!'
Flying fun!

In PE this week, the children have been working on throwing and catching with increasing accuracy. Sports bibs make the perfect resource as they move nice and slowly, and the children aren’t so cautious of being bumped by a ball if they don’t quite make the catch. There was some very dynamic throwing going on to try and land the bibs in the hoops, with plenty of success!
Something to look forward to
Continuing our summer theme, next week we will be making a fruit salad!
Reminders
*Please could all children have a water bottle in school for snack and lunchtimes.
*If your Little Acorn comes to school on a Monday, please ensure they have wellies and suitable warm clothing for Outdoor Learning. We aim to get out whatever the weather!
